rock more. suck less.

Making music is a joy, so my first job as a guitar teacher is not to mess that up!
My goal is to work as hard as possible while having as much fun as possible.

Private Guitar Lessons

I describe my approach as flexible and collaborative, putting the focus on what each individual student is interested in learning.  Most of my students are songwriters, so we work on expanding their vocabulary on the guitar as a tool for writing as well as for performing.

Other priorities include learning the Nashville Number System (if you’re not already a fan, I’ll show you why it’s the coolest thing ever!), fingering shortcuts, picking, grooves, making the most of the capo, and learning how to figure out the chords to your song.

HOW NOT TO SUCK (When Performing Your Songs)

Get comfortable using a mic, plugging in a guitar, sitting on a chair or stool, standing, in the round, in an office — plus support & feedback from your fellow performers. This workshop will be held in our home studio.

Participants in our most recent HOW NOT TO SUCK class have taken their new skills and confidence into publishers' offices on Music Row, downtown Nashville gigs, and TV auditions in Los Angeles as well as school talent shows and family reunions — where do YOU want to share YOUR music?

Straight from the world-famous Bluebird Café in Nashville, an evening with QUEEN of HEARTS is like a grown-up pajama party with butt-kicking harmonies – full of wit, warmth, and wonderful acoustic music.  And just as their individual voices blend into gorgeous four-part harmonies, the Queens combine bluegrass, pop, folk, and blues to create a one-of-a-kind crazy quilt of soulful and rootsy original music. I wouldn’t be where I’m at on guitar right now if it wasn’t for Ellen. She is absolutely phenomenal! She taught me everything I know, and everything I do know about anything has stemmed from what she taught me.
